Color Is She Weaving
1992, 48" by 84", oil on canvas
South Asian traditions have long since left south
Asian shores, and, in this painting, they have crossed over on a
patterned river, and are moving (in the form of Indian folk animals,
mostly) eventually West, first toward Africa. There, they encounter
and mix into another amazing non-Western tradition, in the form
of an African woman, whose handspun threads have re-woven Michelangelo's
Adam, the white male (whose extended hand now supports an indigo
bunting). But, even embroidered, is he yet beautiful enough? She
is considering. And, clearly, she pulls the strings.
