Ganga
1998, 90" by 72", oil and gold leaf on
canvas
This painting is named for and dedicated to Ganga
Devi, an Indian artist who died in 1991, and for the generous, sustaining
river, the Ganges, for which she was named.
The water which issues forth from so many points
in this painting and in Ganga Devi's paintings is not just water,
but something else, more spiritually charged, which is fluid, recirculating,
regenerative, and generous.
See how, in the painting, whatever is touched by
this water-which-is-not-just-water then also becomes able to give
it.
See how those who are steeped in it, soaking in
it, soaking it in seem to be gaining something profound.
What is this "Ganga" which issues and
reissues so vigorously?
What is it, do you think, that appears to spring
from one source, but which must have come to that source from still
another source?
