Medicine
2001-2002, 92" by 72", oil on linen
This painting is about the Tibetan medical idea
that effecting a cure depends upon the transformation of poisons
into medicine.
The alchemy happens not because of some bioengineered
transfer, but in your mind, when you choose to embrace energy and
to take passionate, devotional risks.
The central action in this painting is a choice
between two kinds of teachers, both represented by death (since,
presumably, "death" has lived a full life and has the
benefit of experience): the shrinking, distrustful teacher, who
clutches a bludgeoning club, and the vibrant, positive teacher,
who virtually blooms.
Both teachers may be convincing; one practices
medicine.
